What makes Barcelona so special?
Barcelona is Spain's most modern, outward-looking and cosmopolitan city. It's a major Mediterranean port and the prosperous capital of Catalonia, one of Europe's most dynamic regions. There has been continuous human settlement here since before Roman times and the city has grown and adapted to meet new challenges throughout its long history. Hosting the 1992 Olympic Games was the most recent impetus for successful redevelopment and renewal.
Barcelona is the main centre of a metropolitan region of 4.5 million inhabitants: the sixth largest urban area in Europe in terms of population, and the fifth in terms of industrial occupation.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is located on the coast and bounded by the Collserola ridge and rivers Besós and Llobregat. The city is less than 150 kilometres from the Pyrenees. Barcelona's location on the shores of the Mediterranean means that it enjoys a warm, welcoming climate and pleasant temperatures all year round.
